The Slacker - Interactive Physical Computing Project

Description:

Inspired by an interesting phenomenon in the office, in this project, we made an interactive installation depicting a slacker working in the office. When the supervisor is approaching his/her seat, he/her will start to type on the computer. When the supervisor left, he/she will stop typing immediately.

Tool list:

Arduino Nano 33 Iot, Servo motor, Sharp IR Sensor, Resistors, Gears, Wooden sticks, Hot glue, Paperboard, Foamboard.

Process:

Since Zhaozhi was in the US, and I was in Shanghai, so most of the collaboration happens online. He looks into the programming and I worked on the crafting and adapting the sensor and programing into our project.

Drafts:

Prototype 1:

To make sure the sensor and the servo motor work well with our design, we made the first prototype with the circuit.

However, in this prototype, the servo motor can only move in one direction. So we were thinking about the solution to fix the problem.

Prototype 2:

In this prototype, we used cardboard to make a simple version of the interface.

Prototype 3:

In this prototype, we changed the interface to make it more sturdy and used the sweep function of the servo motor so the figure could now type with both hands.

Also, we replaced the wooden hands with foam board, cause they are lighter in weight and easier to control.

In this project, I was able to collaborate with my partner effectively even we are in different time zones. If I could have more time working on this project, I would make the interface design more attractive.
